Does Degenerative Disc Disease Require Surgery?

By Patrick Foote

Degenerative disc disease almost never requires spine surgery. Generally speaking, spine surgery is an elected procedure that a patient will agree to when the discomfort and pain associated with a spinal condition become severe, and nonsurgical treatments prove ineffective. There are some instances when surgery is required to treat a spinal condition because spinal nerve compression is creating an emergency situation, but those are extremely rare cases.

Degenerative disc disease is inappropriately named, as it is not actually a disease. Instead, degeneration of the intervertebral discs is a condition that occurs naturally as we age. Degenerative disc disease refers to the weakening and flattening of intervertebral discs in the spinal column. For reasons not completely understood, this weakening and flattening of discs is more rapid, severe, and painful in certain individuals than in others.

Most people experiencing degenerative disc disease will find that the symptoms will dissipate and eventually disappear completely. It is recommended that those with persistent symptoms try nonsurgical treatment efforts before resorting to surgery. If nonsurgical methods have been tried for several months with no avail, patients may wish to look into surgery as a viable option to treat degenerative disc disease. There are several ways the spine can be operated upon, including open spine surgery and minimally invasive spine surgery.

Open Back Surgical Methods

Open spine surgery is an option many people take to relieve the pain and discomfort of degenerative disc disease. Open back surgery is the most traditional type of spine surgery. In open back surgery, large incisions are made in the back or torso so that the surgeon can access the affected area of the spine, and then the surgeon will remove degenerated tissue and other elements of the spine to increase the room where nerve roots and the spinal cord reside within the spinal column. Spinal fusion often follows, which is meant to stabilize the spine after parts of spinal anatomy are surgically removed.

There are individual types of open spine surgeries designed to solve individual problems. A few types of open back surgery include:

— Facetectomy – This procedure removes a facet joint (spinal joints that exist in pairs on each vertebra) to relieve pressure in the spinal column.

— Foraminotomy – In this procedure, a foramen (a nerve passageway) is enlarged to relieve pressure on a pinched nerve root.

— Laminectomy – This procedure removes all or part of the lamina (a plate on each vertebra protecting spinal canal and cord) to allow pinched nerves to be relieved.

— Laminotomy – This procedure increases the space between the lamina and spinal cord, and it allows nerves to travel through more easily.

— Discectomy – In this procedure, all or part of a damaged intervertebral disc is removed. After the disc is removed, it is common for the surgeon to fuse the two vertebrae that were separated by the disc so that they become one, immobile vertebra.

— Corpectomy – This is typically the most invasive spinal surgery of all. In this surgery, an entire vertebral body is removed from the back.

— Fusion – A fusion involves two vertebral bodies being fused together to function as one vertebra. Fusion is often done in conjunction with many of the procedures listed above.

Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery Techniques

Minimally invasive laser spine surgery is far different from open back surgery. This endoscopic surgical technique uses lasers, scopes, and other medical tools to target the specific cause of pain and remove or vaporize the source of the nerve compression. Incisions from laser spine surgery are less than one inch long.

Don’t Go Through the Process Alone

Don’t just assume that you need surgery to find relief from your degenerative disc disease symptoms. Talk to your doctor to see what the most effective treatment method for your case will be, and ask whether there are any nonsurgical treatments you haven’t tried yet that could help alleviate your pain.

If you truly feel that surgery is needed in your case, ask your doctor about the risks and benefits of spine surgery. Talk family and friends to seek out additional trusted opinions. Do some home research on spine surgeons and the different procedures available, and find the one that is the right fit for you.

Jason-2 satellite launched to measure sea levels

Friday, June 20, 2008

The Ocean Surface Topography Mission (OSTM), or Jason-2, satellite, has been launched into low Earth orbit. A Delta II rocket carrying the satellite lifted off from Space Launch Complex 2W at the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, United States, at 07:46 GMT this morning. Spacecraft separation occurred around an hour later, and the solar panels on the satellite have deployed.

OSTM is a collaboration between the American space agency, NASA, and the French space agency, CNES. It will study and map the surface of the oceans from space. The Delta II rocket flew in the 7320 configuration, the lowest capacity variant, with three solid rocket motors, and no third stage. The exact launch time was 07:46:25.192 GMT.

This is the third launch of a Delta II carrier rocket to be conducted so far this year, and the 137th overall. The next Delta II is scheduled to launch in mid-late August, with the GeoEye-1 civilian imagery satellite, however A GPS satellite launch which was delayed from mid July to an unconfirmed date could potentially occur before this. This is the 32nd orbital launch of 2008.

Technology giant Microsoft completes acquisition of GitHub

Monday, October 29, 2018

On Friday, US-based technology giant Microsoft confirmed acquisition of software code hosting and version controlling website GitHub. The announcement was made by Microsoft via their official blog, which also mentioned Nat Friedman was to become new Chief Executive Officer of GitHub.

Microsoft had announced plans to acquire GitHub for a price of 7.5 billion US dollars (USD) on June 4. On October 19, the European Union’s regulators approved the acquisition. According to the June announcement, Microsoft was to pay the amount in stock.

After Microsoft made the announcement, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella tweeted, saying, “I’m thrilled to welcome GitHub to Microsoft. Together, we will continue to advance GitHub as a platform loved by developers and trusted by organizations.”

In a GitHub blog titled “Pull request successfully merged. Starting build…”, Nat Friedman said making the platform “accessible to more developers around the world” as well as “[r]eliability, security, and performance” were in “top of mind for” them. He also stated, “GitHub will operate independently as a community, platform, and business” and “will retain its product philosophy”, keeping “its developer-first values”. He also wrote today was to be his first day as GitHub’s CEO.

Friedman was previously the CEO of Xamarin, a software company that allows developers to create native iOS, Android and Windows phone applications written in the C# programming language. Microsoft acquired Xamarin in 2016.

According to Friedman’s blog, GitHub is used by more than 31 million developers worldwide. Technology giants including companies like Airbnb, Apple, Google, Facebook and Microsoft itself have been using GitHub for their open-source projects. However, on May 31, days before Microsoft announced plans for GitHub acquisition, desktop environment software GNOME completed moving from GitHub to GitLab, another software code sharing, hosting and version control providing website, a competitor of GitHub.

Wikinews interviews Donald K. Allen, independent candidate in US presidential elections

Monday, July 7, 2008

While nearly all mainstream coverage of the 2008 Presidential election has focused on the Democratic and Republican candidates, the race for the White House also includes independents and third-party candidates. These prospects represent a variety of views that may not be acknowledged by the major party platforms.

Wikinews has reached out to these candidates throughout the campaign and now presents an interview with Donald K. Allen of Youngstown, Ohio, an independent presidential candidate who registered with the Federal Election Committee in January 2007.

((Wikinews)) Why do you want to be President?

Donald K. Allen: We have had Republican or Democratic control of our government for 150 years, and as we have seen during the last few administrations, it has been very dysfunctional, arbitrary, and often harmful. I believe that electing another party man or woman would simply continue the bipartisanism that has repeatedly brought improvement to a standstill. Only an independent can work with both sides of the aisle and bring back unity for the benefit of this country and its citizens. I want to be President to make major improvements in America, from boosting our economy, to making health care affordable, to resolving the conflict in the Middle East. My platform is extensive, and I discuss many issues that are important to Americans, but are not being debated by the two party candidates, i.e. The Fair Tax and building the border fence/wall. I also hope to involve more Americans in government. Our Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, but instead we have evolved into a ruling class spending 30, 40, and sometimes 50 years in Congress.

((WN)) What are your three key policies?

DA: My three key policies will be to: 1. Take care of America and Americans first. 2. Turn our economy around. 3. Secure our borders.
As soon as it is before me, I will sign The Fair Tax Bill to eliminate Federal Income Tax on individuals, small businesses, and corporations, creating a truly positive incentive to build and produce in this country. It will also repeal the 16th Amendment and initiate a consumptive tax that will bring everyone into the tax base, instead of only the honest people who work for a paycheck. It will make economic incentive checks look like Band-Aids and put significantly more money in our pockets and in business’ accounts to pay for health insurance or other needs. Eliminating corporate income tax will allow companies to invest in research and development, expand operations, hire more employees, pay for health care, build more factories, and create more jobs.
I will order the Army Corps of Engineers to start on the east end and the Navy Seabees to begin on the west end and build an effective barrier on the Mexican border to stop the free flow of illegals into this country, as well as drug traffic. Defeatists say it will not work, but you won’t be able to drive a pickup truck across the border anymore. Along with this will be a positive, secure identification system for guest workers who are here or wish to come here. Once the border fence is complete, I will extradite the 25% of our prison population who are illegal aliens.
I will establish “loser pays” rule for litigation in this country, greatly reducing frivolous and phony lawsuits in America, freeing up our courts to deal with more serious matters on a timely basis. This will also reduce the cost of doing business for insurance companies, thereby reducing premiums and making health care more affordable, which will work well with The Fair Tax. Coinciding with this will be extreme pressure on Congress to pass true tort reform.

((WN)) Have you ever run for political office before?

DA: No, and I consider that a plus. I will be able to view all issues objectively without prior obligations and debts owed to lobbyists, political action committees, corporations, and politically powerful people. I will answer only to you, the people of America, and I will always put you first.

((WN)) Can you win the 2008 Presidential election?

DA: This is a land of tremendous opportunity, and possibility. It may not seem probable that I will win, but it is definitely possible. The key is our Nation’s media, which is obligated through political pressure to focus on the two parties only, and give virtually no “face time” to anyone else. It is a closed system that makes it extremely difficult for any non-party candidate to even be noticed, but I keep trying. Right now Americans are receiving Pavlovian conditioning, hearing the name, “Obama,” ten thousand times a day, and “McCain,” six thousand times a day. Remember, the press is liberal. If enough people call in to radio talk shows asking to hear more about Donald K. Allen, and e-mailing television commentators like Bill O’Reilly and Lou Dobbs, then perhaps you will see me or hear me. Otherwise it is up to getting name recognition out there so that when people vote, they can write me in.

((WN)) What made you choose Christopher D. Borcik as your running mate?

DA: Chris is a viable, competent, and very capable individual who is a multiplier for the credibility of my campaign. As a Navy pilot and now a Delta pilot, he handles tremendous responsibility on a daily basis, and is trustworthy and serious about his work and committment to this campaign. He is a family man and a sincere Christian who applies his belief to his decision-making process, and puts his religion above political correctness. I met Chris at the first “Independents’ Day” forum in Cincinnati, and liked him immediately. I’m totally happy that he consented to run as vice president.
This exclusive interview features first-hand journalism by a Wikinews reporter. See the collaboration page for more details.

An Exercise Plan For Older People Thats Proving Promising

By Kirsten Whittaker

So much of the time we hear about exciting research valuable scientific finds and then nothing more. Does anyone take what is learned in the lab and try and apply it to the real world to get results for real people?

Researchers at the University of South Carolina’s Arnold School of Public Health, collaborating with those at the Texas A&M Health Science Center School of Rural Public Health (HSC) have done just that. The teams have recently completed evaluating data from the Active for Life program finding that exercise plans for older people that have been tested in the labs can actually be implemented by organizations in the community.

Active for Life is involved with taking promising research based techniques and bringing them into community settings.

This program, funded by a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and based at the Texas A&M Health Science Center School of Rural Public Health is intended to encourage physical activity among mature adults particularly middle aged and older people among us who lead a rather sedentary lifestyle.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) tells us that Americans can increase their number of healthy years just by living a healthy lifestyle including eating right, not smoking and being more active.

Sadly, almost 64% of adults age 65 and older dont get the 30 minutes of exercise per day recommended to keep aging bodies in top form. The need to get more people up and moving is serious, which is why the team feels so strongly about delivering lab tested programs to people who can truly benefit.

The program involved studying data on participants in two Active for Life programs, Active Choices or Active Living Every Day.

Active Choices uses telephone coaching that follows a face to face meeting to create an activity plan, supply exercise logs and a pedometer and set goals for getting active in everyday life. The client receives regular mail and telephone pep talks for six months to help build habits and reinforce changes. The focus of this approach is an individualized program with lasting support, but the participant is also invited to regular health events

Active Living Every Day, the other program studied, involves a six month intervention that uses facilitated group sessions to help participants find ways to get regular activity into their daily routine. The goal is to learn how to find the time for 30 minutes of moderately intense activity on most days. The encouragement of the group, kept small by design, forms a wonderful support system that lasts long after the program ends.

The team of researchers, among them Dr. Sara Wilcox of the University of South Carolina, looked at data on just about 6,000 subjects from 12 different sites, who were part of these programs from 2003 to 2007.

The team found that the programs produced significant increases in the total amount of physical activity, and improvements in intensity, moderate to vigorous intensity in particular. Those in the Active Living Every Day also reported a lower level of stress and depression (probably due to the social support structure created around the study).

Participants in both programs showed more satisfaction with their body appearance and function, and small drops in weight as well.

“This initiative was different because it showed that community-based organizations could put these two programs in place, reach a large number of older adults, and produce meaningful changes.” says Wilcox.

Meaningful changes like:

– help controlling weight.

– contributing to healthy bones, muscles and joints.

– reducing falls among the elderly.

– lessening anxiety and depression.

– reducing the need for hospitalizations, doctor visits and medicines.

Even those who are frail or old could see an improvement in their condition by getting started with an exercise plan. Slowly and sensibly of course. The findings from the Active for Life program are published in the October issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

Pennsylvania state trooper found guilty of first-degree murder

Friday, March 20, 2009

In the United States, a suspended Pennsylvania state trooper has been convicted of first-degree murder for killing his girlfriend’s estranged husband.

Kevin Foley, 43, faces a mandatory life sentence without parole for slashing to death John Yelenic, a Blairsville dentist who was in the final stages of divorcing his wife, Michele. Foley’s attorney said he plans to appeal the decision. Prosecutors did not seek the death penalty.

Foley previously said he “loathed Dr. Yelenic” and asked another fellow trooper to help kill him. During his testimony, which lasted several hours, Foley claimed he was joking and had no true intention of carrying out the threat, but the Indiana County jury rejected that defense after about six hours of deliberations.

John Yelenic was found dead in his home on April 13, 2006, one day before he was planning on signing his divorce papers. Charges were brought against Foley in September 2007, more than 17 months after the murder.

Foley, who had been on suspension from the Pennsylvania State Police, was himself the final witness to take the stand Wednesday in the trial. Foley insisted he was innocent during his testimony, and even made jokes that the jury laughed at on a few occasions.

“I never made a threat with the intention of carrying it out,” Foley said under cross-examination by the prosecution.

When Senior Deputy Attorney General Anthony Krastek pressed Foley for what was funny about asking another state trooper to help him kill Yelenic, Foley answered, “There isn’t any joke. It’s just my personality, my behavior (with co-workers).”

Prosecutors said Foley killed Yelenic after going to the dentist’s house to confront him over the terms of the divorce. Prosecutors claim Foley slashed Yelenic several times with a knife and pushed his head through a small window. Yelenic bled to death.

“John has his justice tonight,” Mary Ann Clark, a cousin of Yelenic, told MSNBC. “John deserved this; he was the most wonderful person in the world. He died the most horrible death and tonight, this is his night. The system worked.”

Foley had been living with Michele Yelenic for two years at the time of the homicide. Prosecutors previously said Foley and Michele helped perpetuate rumors that Dr. Yelenic molested their son. John and Michele Yelenic had been separated in 2002. Michele Yelenic stood to collect Dr. Yelenic’s estate and a US$1 million life insurance policy, and could lose about $2,500 a month in support if the divorce was finalized, a Pennsylvania grand jury previously determined.

Michele Yelenic, who has not appeared at the trial, may face legal action herself, media reports indicated. A sentencing hearing for Foley is scheduled for June 1.

Headphones And What Makes Them Work

By Ronald Rougeaux

Headphones and what makes them work

What are headphones? Simple answer? They basically comprise a pair of transducers that receive the audio signal from whatever music device they’re connected to and convert those signals into sound waves to make the music and sounds we enjoy so much.

Some factors to consider:

1. Open backing… Will not usually give good sound quality due to the surrounding disturbances (outside noise).

2. Closed backing… blocks outside noise better than the open backed ones.

…from the phone, to the computer to the iPod and everything in between. These versatile devices improves our lives with the many great uses they do for you and I. From giving us mobility and privacy, as well as being compatible with computers to enjoy our video games with great sound.

Here are the main basic types:

1. Circumaural… these are big and cover your ears. Examples: Sennheiser 695, Ultrasone Proline 750, AKG K701. These are normally considered to be the “best” of the “best in sound. They are the largest physically so not well suited to carrying with your Ipod, but also provide the highest sound quality.

2. Supra aural… these go on top of your ears. Examples: Sennheiser PXC300, Koss Porta Pro, Sennheiser PXC250. Somewhat smaller size than the circumaural. Many times this design is used in noise cancelling headphones.

3. Canalphones… these go inside the ear canals and because they block outside noise are called passive noise reducing earphones. Examples: Ultimate Ears Super FI5, Shure E5C, Etymotic Research ER-4.

Compact and portable with very good sound quality.

4. Earbuds…are the main type that normally come with iPods. They go in the outer ear and sort of just hang there. Normally considered the poorest quality and most dangerous to a person’s hearing.

Why? Because they don’t block any outside noise. So, to hear them properly the volume is usually turned up to dangerous hearing levels. Usually average to poor sound quality.

5. Bluetooth…using Bluetooth technology. These wireless devices operate over a short-range and function without any cords or cables. They provide excellent service within a particular range, usually about 9 feet. Bluetooth headphones sport the latest in technology. Connections are automatic and the devices are simple and have no confusing workings. You can also change the settings for accepted and denied connectivity. Although Bluetooth headphones get its name from the respective technology, essentially the name is from the tenth century King of Denmark- Harald Bluetooth.

6. Waterproof…these are mainly ear canal type of earphones that allow the listener to listen to their favorite music or sounds…submerged underwater. The earpiece itself is waterproof, besides being in the ear and preventing water from entering. Of course, the Ipod, or other player has to be enclosed in a waterproof case or container also.

Remember, try to get the best headphone you can afford. Not only will get better listening enjoyment, the better headphones can actually protect your hearing more than the cheaper quality (means more volume) sound devices.
